How Do Bicycle Hydraulic Disc Brakes Work?

A bicycle hydraulic disc brake transfers pressure from the brake lever through fluid inside the hose. The pressure moves the caliper pistons, which press the brake pads against the rotor. Model selection depends on the caliper, lever, hose, fluid, pad, rotor and mounting interface working as one matched system.

2-Piston vs 4-Piston Hydraulic Disc Brakes

Conclusion: Do not select a brake only by piston count. Rotor diameter, mount type, lever design, hose length, fluid system, bicycle load and intended riding application must be reviewed together.

Hydraulic vs Mechanical Disc Brakes

Hydraulic disc brakes

  • Fluid-operated system
  • Requires system-specific fluid and service procedure
  • Lever, hose and caliper operate as a matched system
  • Available in TESNO’s MTB, e-bike, road and kids ranges

Mechanical disc brakes

  • Cable-actuated system
  • Cable tension and housing are key service items
  • Lever, cable and mechanical caliper operate together
  • Available as a separate TESNO brake category

Frequently Asked Questions

What are hydraulic disc brakes?
Hydraulic disc brakes use fluid pressure to transfer force from the brake lever to the caliper pistons. The pistons move the brake pads against the rotor to slow the bicycle.
Which hydraulic disc brake models are available?
The current catalog contains 21 hydraulic disc brake models covering e-bike, MTB, road-bike and children’s bicycle applications.
Does TESNO offer 2-piston and 4-piston brakes?
Yes. The catalog includes selected 2-piston and 4-piston models. Some models do not state a piston count, so the exact configuration must be confirmed by model.
Which rotor sizes are supported?
Depending on the model, hydraulic brake configurations cover 140 mm, 160 mm, 180 mm and 203 mm rotors. Road and children’s models generally use the smaller sizes listed in their model specifications.
Are Flat Mount hydraulic brakes available?
Yes. Selected road-bike models use Flat Mount calipers. Other models use IS or Post Mount configurations.
Are sensor-control brake levers available for e-bikes?
Selected E-bike models include sensor-control lever designs. The connector and electrical requirement must be confirmed before ordering.
Is a parking function available?
HD-E900 is shown with a parking function and is positioned for e-bike and electro-tricycle applications.
Do all models use mineral oil?
No universal fluid claim should be made. The road, MTB and children’s sections specify non-corrosive mineral oil, while the e-bike pages do not uniformly state the fluid type.
Are rotors and adapters included?
Kit contents must be confirmed during quotation. Please specify whether you require the brake set only or also need rotors, adapters, pads and other accessories.
How do I choose the correct hose length?
Provide the bicycle type, frame size, front or rear position, routing method and required length. Do not assume one hose length fits every bicycle.
Can I order samples?
Sample availability can be reviewed according to the selected model, specification and current stock or production arrangement.
What information is required for a quotation?
Provide the bicycle type, model or photo, front/rear position, piston preference, mount type, rotor diameter, hose length, lever requirement, quantity, packaging and destination country.
How should hydraulic disc brakes be bled?
Bleeding must follow the exact brake model and specified fluid. TESNO should not publish one universal procedure until the model, fluid and service instructions have been confirmed.
